Inventor, Storyteller, Hobbyist, Tinkerer, Artist, Musician…
Who is a maker?
- Makers are people who embrace the do-it-yourself spirit whether individually, or in teams.
- Makers create, build, invent, re-purpose, hack, alter or otherwise change and improve the world around them through thinking and creativity.
- Makers use Arduino, circuit boards, wood, clay, fabric, LEDs, metal, plastic, robotics, yarn, sewing machines, computers, hot glue guns, paint, batteries, fire, electricity, recyclables – just about anything you can imagine.
What is Maker Faire?
Maker Faire is the World’s Largest Show (and Tell) festival—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.
Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors, and commercial exhibitors. They are of all ages and backgrounds. Maker Faire’s mission is to entertain, inform, connect and inspire these thousands of Makers and aspiring Makers.
The inaugural Maker Faire was held in San Mateo, CA and in 2011 celebrated its sixth annual Bay Area event with some 100,000 people in attendance. As Maker Faire has grown in popularity and relevance, additional flagship faires were launched in 2010 in Detroit and New York City. Community-driven, independently produced Mini Maker Faire events inspired by Maker Faire are now being produced around the United States and the world, including this very New Mexico styled Albuquerque Mini Maker Faire.
What’s being said about the Maker movement:
“The Maker Movement is also touted as a boon to education because of the science, technology, engineering and math components necessary for many inventions.” -Entrepreneur Magazine
“…the gathering of folks from all walks of life who blend science, technology, craft and art to make things both goofy and grand.” -New York Times
“If you teach people to do things through science and technology, they do,” Savage said. “And kids find it most exciting of all.” -Adam Savage in an interview with PBS News Hour Extra
